Assam NRC: Final list published

The process is being carried out to segregate Indian citizens living in Assam from those who had illegally entered the state from Bangladesh after 1971.

Rights groups and tribal organisations in Assam have claimed that at least 2 lakh indigenous people have been excluded from the NRC allegedly for lack of proper documents.

Saturday (September 14): Assam government has today released the final full list of NRC (National Register of Citizens) on its official portal nrcassam.nic.in with the names of 3.3 crore applicants.

Before this the final NRC list was published on August 31 with 3,11,21,004 names who were found eligible for inclusion in final NRC, leaving out over 20 lakh.

NRC Coordinator Prateek Hajela had earlier said, “A total of 3,11,21,004 persons are found eligible for inclusion in final NRC, leaving out 19,06,657 persons, including those who did not submit their claims. Those who are not satisfied with the outcome of the claims can appeal before the Foreigners Tribunals.”

Adequate judicial process available for affected persons to appeal to Foreigners’ Tribunal within 120 days from August 8. To facilitate appeal, 200 new FTs to be functional from today, in addition to 100 already existing.

Responding to the NRC process, AASU (All India Students Union) advisor Samujjal Bhattacharyya said, “The Supreme Court-monitored NRC was not error-free. The names of indigenous people have been excluded while many foreigners have been included. The NRC must be free of illegal migrants and the indigenous should not be made to go through FT as they cannot be foreigners by any definition of the term.”
