Thursday (September 26): Wednesday evening in Pune city was not normal monsoonal evening. Heavy raining, that started at around 8 p.m., continued uninterruptedly for the whole night, disrupting normal life of Puneites.

With no genuine drainage system in place, the rainwater started draining out through city streets and within short period of time major streets in the core areas of city got merged under water, thus seriously hampering connectivity of the city. Many professionals, students, daily wage workers etc. got trapped in the heavy rain while returning home from their work places.

While on one hand city administrative authorities were doing their job quite well, there was a group of conscious citizens who was using ‘Social Media’ as a tool to identify danger zones in the city and reach out to those people who had got stuck in disastrous rains and then offering them immediate help.

‘Aamhi Punekar’ is a facebook page devoted to highlight the civic issues of Pune city. It is run by some active and conscious Puneites.

Last night when heavy rains lashed out the city, ‘Aamhi Punekar came forward to help people. A message reading, “Its raining heavily outside, if anyone is stucked around Kothrud side and needs help…ping us” was posted on its facebook page and within a short span of time messages demanding help started pouring on the page.

“People asked for help from Kothrud, Warje, Chandni Chowk, Katraj and other areas of Pune. We tried to reach out to as much number of people as we could. We were working till late night. Our sole motto is to work for those in trouble.” one of the team members of Aamhi Punekar told Maharashtra Bulletin.

He said, “The common perception in public about the Social Media is not good. But I must say there is immense potential in the Social Media to change the things we do. We can reach out to large number of people within short time.”

About helping plan for rainy weather of next 2-3 days, he said “Our team is working effortlessly. Anyone who needs help can reach us on our page.”

Many Puneites thanked ‘Aamhi Punekar’ on its page for help the team offered.
