Glad that PM was reminded of Nehru’s contributions by the House Majority Leader: Jairam Ramesh

Mr. Hoyer quoted Mahatma Gandhi to define democracy as "something that gives the weak, the same chance as the strong."

Monday (September 23): Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Mr. Jairam Ramesh said today that he is glad that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was reminded of the contributions of Jawaharlal Nehru by an American Democratic leader at the ‘Howdy Modi’ event in Houston.

“I’m glad that PM Modi was reminded of the contributions of Nehru by the House Majority Leader in Houston,” he said in a tweet.

 

 

While welcoming Prime Minister Modi at the event on Sunday, US House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer had invoked Mahatma Gandhi and India’s first prime minister Nehru in his speech.

Praising Mahatma Gandhi and independent India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Mr. Hoyer said at the “Howdy, Modi!” event that, “[India], like America, [is] proud of its ancient traditions to secure a future according to Gandhi’s teaching and Nehru’s vision of India as a secular democracy where respect for pluralism and human rights safeguard every individual.”

Mr. Hoyer quoted Mahatma Gandhi to define democracy as “something that gives the weak, the same chance as the strong.”
