Monday (September 23): Union Home Minister Amit Shah today mooted the idea of a multipurpose identity card for citizens with all utilities like Aadhaar, passport, driving licence and bank accounts.
“We can have just one card for all utilities like Aadhaar, passport, bank account, driving licence, voter card. This is a potential,” he said.
Mr. Amit Shah was speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony for construction of a new building of Registrar General of India (RGI) that conducts the census exercise.
He said, “The digital census has the potential to bring all kinds of cards such as Aadhaar, passport, bank account, driving license under one platform. Why is it so difficult to link and update birth and death registration with census data?”
“The NPR will be updated on a priority basis as it helps in tracking criminal activities and better planning and execution of government schemes,” he said.
Mr. Shah also said the Census 2021 data will be collected digitally through mobile app. He said ₹12,000 crore would be spent on preparation of National Population Register (NPR) and census.
The Minister said there should also be a system that when a person dies, the information is updated in the population data automatically.
