ISRO misses ‘Vikram’ by 2.1 km

Contact with Vikram may have been lost, but Chandrayaan-2 is not over.

PM Modi earlier watched the proceedings as the lander began its descent towards the moon surface at an ISRO centre here, and later addressed ISRO scientists.

Saturday (September 7): Chandrayaan-2’s lander ‘Vikram’ has lost communication with ground stations during its final descent in the early hours of Saturday.

“Vikram lander descent was as planned and normal performance was observed up to an altitude of 2.1 km. Subsequently, the communications from the lander to ground stations was lost. The data is being analysed.” ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) chief K. Sivan said.

“We came very close, but we need to cover more ground.”, PM Modi told while addressing ISRO scientists hours after ISRO announced that it has lost the contact with lander. He further said, “Learnings from today will make us stronger and better.”

While asking ISRO scientists not to get disheartened by the hurdles in the moon mission Chandrayaan-2, PM asserted, “The best is yet to come in our space programme. India is with you.”

About Chandrayaan-2:

Chandrayaan-2 is the second lunar exploration mission developed by ISRO after 2008’s Chandrayaan-1. Launched on 22 July 2019 at 2.43 PM IST (09:13 UTC), with the main objective to map the location and abundance of lunar water, the mission was supposed to land on the near side of the Moon in the south polar region.

It consists of a lunar orbiter, the Vikram lander, and the Pragyan rover.
