P. V. Sindhu (Pusarla Venkata Sindhu), a 24-year old from Hyderabad, has created history today (August 25) becoming the first Indian to win the 2019 BWF World Championships held in Switzerland, defeating Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara with 21-7, 21-7. She dedicated the gold medal to her mother whose birthday also happens to be on the same day (August 25).

Before this, in 2013 she had become the first Indian player to get a medal in ’BWF (Badminton World Federation) World Championships’ winning bronze medal in 2013 World Championships. She was also runner up of the 2017 BWF World Championships and 2018 BWF World Championships. She has won the silver medal in women’s singles at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and 2018 Asian Games.

The recipient of Padma Shri award- the fourth highest civilian honor of India in 2015, she is also the first Indian woman to win a silver medal in the 2016 Summer Olympics.
