Monday (December 16): Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other Congress leaders are holding a sit-in at the India Gate in Delhi in solidarity with the students protesting against the amended Citizenship Act.
Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said the two-hour symbolic protest, which started at 4 pm, is to express solidarity with students from Jamia Millia Islamia University and others institutes.
Police had used force against students of Jamia on Sunday after a protest against the amended law turned violent in which buses were set on fire.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee hit the streets of Kolkata today and said she will continue her protests until the NRC and Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) are rolled back.
Reading out an oath to thousands gathered, Mamata reiterated that she will not allow the NRC and Citizenship law in the state.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed for peace and called the protests against citizenship law “unfortunate and deeply distressing.”
“Debate, discussion and dissent are essential parts of democracy but, never has damage to public property and disturbance of normal life been a part of our ethos,” he tweeted.
